Orange
Orange used to be called Ä¡eolurÄad in Old English, or yellow-red; apparently the first time anyone heard the word orange as a colour name was in the sixteenth century when Elizabeth of York described some fabric she had bought as âorengeâ. Kandinsky said that orange was âred brought nearer to humanity by yellowâ. Orange is a determined, vibrant colour, and you have to be confident to wear it â it is on the opposite side of the colour wheel to blue, which is shy. Some prison uniforms are orange, traffic lights are orange, terror alerts are orange, and did you know airplane black boxes are in fact orange?
One of my evening dresses is orange â it means watch out, close the front door, tornado coming! Near where I live in the South of France is the city of Orange, not so named for the colour or the fruit, as I thought, but after Arausio, a Gaulish god. Orange â the colour, that is â has had its moments in art and fashion, but has never been big permanently, like its glamorous sister red, because itâs difficult, doesnât suit everyone and is considered to be too brilliant to be elegant. Itâs what you call a slow grower, but it is used much more than it used to be. It appeared a lot in Art Deco fashion illustrations in the 1920s and was madly popular in the 60s and 70s (I know because I was there and there was a lot of criminality involving brown and orange in kitchens). It gained currency at the time as it was considered bohemian and counterculture; also it was (and still is) the robe colour of both Buddhist monks and Hare Krishnas.
